AI sorting moves into daily operations

In a recent interview with Salmonexpert, Stian Rognlid, Aquaticode’s CEO, discussed how artificial intelligence is transforming hatchery operation.

Traditional size-based grading is no longer sufficient for modern aquaculture. Hatcheries are now adopting AI phenotyping to sort salmon based on health markers, growth efficiency, and survival potential—automatically, in real time, and without harming the fish.

This shift is powered by Aquaticode’s patented phenotyping system, SORTpro. The system combines advanced imaging, deep learning, and soft-touch robotics to sort up to 10,000 fish per hour. It also integrates directly with both manual and automated vaccination lines, enabling better timing, reduced handling, and smarter decisions at scale.

The interview highlights both the technical and operational aspects of SORTpro adoption—emphasizing that while the technology is advanced, its value depends on how well it fits into daily workflows.
